“But you’re clearly picking exceptional examples, Professor. Most people can’t create tools like Helen and Yolanda, or have great breakthroughs like Cliff did.”
I’ll acknowledge that the stories I’ve told in this chapter are about people who are not average workers. But remember, we are talking about great careers, not average ones. And if you suppose that these constitute a very small handful of examples I know of, then you are mistaken. They’re not the majority yet, but their numbers grow all the time. As they do, more and more organizations will adopt the expectation for “exceptional.”
Indeed, I know people who have sped up their careers and served society by delivering innovation across the widest range of work and industries. There are those whose innovations increased the pace of corporate processes; those who eliminated entire functions (and some of their fellow workmates); those who found new markets or reinvigorated mature ones; those who lowered costs or drove up productivity; those who increased the likelihood of success in delivering social services; those who developed entirely new product categories; those who pioneered new marketing techniques; those who created new dramatic art; those who created new professional services; and those who brought insight where before there was confusion. The truth is, my problem when planning this chapter was one of having too many examples to share, not a shortage of them. But all of these stories have one common theme: innovation got these people ahead.
Why am I so sure that you can innovate? Because I’ve seen so many men and women from widely different backgrounds do so very successfully, and then go on to use those innovations to craft great careers.
